What is a Presbyterian?
A Presbyterian is a Christian whose understanding of the Christian faith celebrates the sovereignty of God, the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross, and Jesus' resurrection from the dead. We acknowledge the pervasiveness of sin in the world today and understand our own need for redemption, but we rejoice that sin is conquered through the unmerited grace of God--given freely through the Son, Jesus Christ. We are moved by the Holy Spirit to share this gift of grace with others by sharing the love of Jesus Christ in word and in deed. For Presbyterians, the Bible is the inspired word of God, authoritative for a life of faith and service to the One True Word--Jesus Christ. It is Jesus Christ who calls us to discipleship and to life together as God's community--the Church. Christ is the Head of the Church, and we are members of His body. Christ's body is diverse, yet as Presbyterian Christians, we live as part of a unique tradition within Christianity known as the Reformed tradition. Our interpretation of the faith stems historically from John Calvin, a Swiss reformer, of the 16th century. Westminster is a part of the Presbyterian Church (USA), a denomination formed by the merger of two major strands of Presbyterianism--the Northern and Southern Presbyterian churches in 1983. With over 2 million members nationwide, we have our national headquarters in Louisville, KY. Click on the link below to visit the PC(USA) website to learn more about the Presbyterian Church. The denomination sub-divides into regions known as Presbyteries for greater mission and ministry in local regions. Westminster is part of New Hope Presbytery. The proclamation of the gospel for the salvation of humankind. 2. The shelter, nurture, and spiritual fellowship of the children of God. 3. The maintenance of divine worship. 4. The preservation of the truth. 5. The promotion of social righteousness. 6. And the exhibition of the Kingdom of Heaven to the world. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
